The human form presents an artist with his or her greatest challenge as a source of constantly changing shape, mass, proportion, color and texture. The complex interplay of light on the body creates an endlessly shifting composition of values.

Because we are surrounded by other human beings (and mirrors), the figure is a subject we are all experts at evaluating for fidelity to life, whether we are artists or not. We instinctively know when its “right”. This still leaves a very wide latitude for the artist to interpret the figure through his or her mind and hands, to create the work as they perceive it.

All of my figure art is created from life in the studio and/or with the aid of my own reference photos.
